Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
